Eco-friendly and Vegan Hand Soaps and Sanitisers that will Help Protect you from COVID-19

How long ago did you last wash your hands, and how many things have you touched since? Door handles, keyboards, elevator buttons; all of these things could be raising your risks of coming into contact with, and spreading, the novel coronavirus. But as scary as that sounds, now is not the time to panic, since the risk of contracting or spreading the virus can be significantly reduced by something as simple as washing your hands. Today I want to discuss the coronavirus and the importance of cleaning our hands in order to help prevent the virus from spreading, and you can do it all with amazingly effective, eco-friendly soaps and hand sanitisers!

COVID-19, the novel coronavirus, is transferred through droplets when people cough or sneeze, and it could possibly stay present on a surface for up to three days. On top of this, a person can have the virus for up to 14 days before showing symptoms (these include a fever, cough and shortness of breath). These factors mean COVID-19 spread fast and be incredibly hard to contain. When an infected person coughs or sneezes, these droplets can land on nearby surfaces, and in public areas you may be at a higher risk of coming into contact with the droplets.

For the majority of young people, if they catch this COVID-19 they will simply have symptoms of the flu and recover fairly normally. However, among the elderly and those with respiratory issues, the virus can be a lot more serious and could even lead to death. Because of this, we all have a responsibility to contain the virus as much as possible, and keep our communities safe.

To stop spreading the virus one of the best things we can do is to regularly wash our hands with soap for 20+ seconds. But what if washing your hands isn’t an option at that very moment?

As a back-up, using hand sanitiser throughout the day can also be affective, however it is important to make sure you use enough sanitiser to keep your hands moist for 20 seconds, and you must be sure to cover your whole hands. Why does 20 seconds matter so much? As Cheddar explains in this marvellous video, it takes around 20 seconds for soap or a sanitiser to break down and destroy the coronavirus. Soap has the added benefit of not only bonding to the virus (due to it’s fatty membrane) but also bonding with water, which means when you wash your hands the virus is broken down and then washed down the drain. A hand sanitiser can break down the virus too, but you will still want to use soap and water to wash it away from your skin.

When it comes to health, I choose to put this above all else, even if that means sacrificing my ethics to buy something that isn’t vegan or eco-friendly… But in this case I am happily surprised to find out I can do both!

Natural and organic soap is effective and easy to find, (and some of my favourites will be listed below), but I had no idea that you could indeed find natural, organic and effective hand sanitisers in Australia, to help fight against bacteria and viruses. As Biome writes, “The Center for Disease Control and Prevention recommends hand sanitisers with at least 60% alcohol to protect against bacteria and viruses (look for the % specified in the ingredients). Many organic and natural hand sanitizers will protect against bacteria and micro‑organisms other than viruses to a sanitary level, but may not contain enough alcohol to protect against a serious virus such as Coronavirus.”

So, I have complied a little list of hand sanitisers you can use with at least 60% alcohol, and some amazing natural soaps, so that you can shop ethically while protecting yourself and your family:
